What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, means getting your business named when someone asks an AI assistant like ChatGPT to recommend a business like yours. Old search handed people ten links to choose from. An AI assistant hands back one answer. AEO is the work of making sure your name is in it.
How is this different from being high on Google?
The old way, you typed a few words and got a page of links. You wanted to be near the top of that page. Even fourth or fifth got you some calls, because the customer was doing the choosing.
The new way, the customer asks a full question in normal words. "Who should I call for a broken furnace in Sandy?" And they get back a short answer naming one or two businesses. There's no list to scroll. Nobody is comparing you to nine other names.
So there's no fourth place anymore. You are in the answer or you are not. That's the whole difference, and it's why the old scoreboard stopped telling you much.
What actually changes about my website?
Less than you'd think, and none of it is fancy. Three things do most of the work.
- Answer the questions you already get asked. The ones customers ask you on the phone. What does a new water heater run? Do you charge for a quote? How fast can you get here? Put the plain answer on your site, in the words a customer would use.
- Say exactly what you do and where you do it. Not "quality service since 1998." The actual jobs, and the actual towns. If you cover seven towns, name all seven.
- Lay it out so a machine can pick it up. Short paragraphs. A clear heading over each question. The answer right under the heading, not five paragraphs later. Hours, phone, and service area written as text, not baked into a picture.
Notice that all three also make the site better for a human being in a hurry. That's not a coincidence.
Why does it matter whether a machine can read it?
Because an AI assistant isn't browsing your site the way a customer would. It's working from what it has already read about you, and it repeats what it can find plainly stated.
If your hours only exist inside a photo of your storefront, it can't read them. If your service area is implied by a map, it can't read that either. And when it can't find something solid, it doesn't stop. It fills in the gap and often gets it wrong.
Your website is only part of what it reads. It also pulls from your listings on places like Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, and Bing Places. When those disagree with each other about your phone number or your hours, that's the kind of confusion that produces a wrong answer about you.
Is this worth doing for a small shop?
A large share of searches now end without anyone visiting a website at all. The person got their answer on the spot and went ahead and called somebody. If that somebody wasn't you, you never knew the job existed.
The honest part is that none of this is instant. Assistants lean toward businesses that get mentioned in a lot of places, have real reviews, and say the same thing about themselves everywhere. That takes months to build, not days.
The good part is that this is new. In our experience very few small businesses have done any of it yet, so the bar to clear is low and being early counts for a lot.
Common follow-ups
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
No, but they overlap. SEO is about placing high in a list of links. AEO is about being the business an AI assistant names when it gives one answer instead of a list. Good SEO work helps, but it doesn't finish the job on its own.
I keep seeing GEO too. What is that?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It leans toward publishing material the AI quotes and links to as a source. AEO leans toward being named inside the answer itself. In practice the same work covers both, and you don't need to keep them straight.
Can an AI assistant say something wrong about me?
Yes. When an assistant can't find solid information, it fills the gap and gets it wrong. It might list hours you don't keep or towns you don't serve. Accurate, matching information everywhere you appear is the fix.
